昼からゆっくり上野動物園を逆行Midday backwards stroll through Ueno Zoo
上野公園のメイン通りは春（３〜４月）にはたくさんの花見客でにぎわい、人で溢れかえる。

しかし、秋の上野公園は都会の喧騒から離れとても静かに過ごせる。
公園を横切るメインの通りから少し外れると小さい神社が点在するのをご存知だろうか？
上野大仏

6メートルもあったその大仏は火災や震災を乗り越え顔だけが残った。
花園稲荷神社
木々の間から突然現れる朱色の鳥居が連なる風景。
京都の伏見稲荷(en)にも似ている。
この鳥居を抜けると花園稲荷神社に到着する。

花園稲荷神社のすぐ隣にもう一つ「五条天神社」という神社もあり、こちらも雰囲気が良い。
不忍池
神社を抜けて見えて来るのは不忍池（しのばずのいけ）

不忍池の中央には蓮に囲まれた「弁財堂」がある。
この周りには「めがねの碑」をはじめとするユニークな石碑が多いことにも注目して欲しい。
なぜここに？なんのために？供養になっているのか？は定かではない。
上野動物園
不忍池を抜け、上野動物園（正式名称：東京都恩賜上野動物園（とうきょうとおんしうえのどうぶつえん））の「池之端門（いけのはたもん）」を目指す。
ここは日本最古の動物園だ。動物の数も多く、何度来ても飽きることはない。
ここからの入場者は少ない。新しいルートで巡るのも楽しい。
私のおすすめは午後から閉園までゆっくり巡るコース。
午後からの動物園は夜行性動物が動き出す。
いつもぐったり横になっているライオンもトラも夕方近くなると活発に動く。
夜行性のオオサンショウウオ（ジャイアントサラマンダー）も
日頃は岩場に隠れているが、珍しくゆっくりと全身を出してくれた。
建物巡り
体力があればそのまま上野の建物めぐりをお勧めする。
上野公園の北側を囲むように多くの美術館・博物館が建つ。
中に入って観賞をするのも良いが、著名な建築家が建てた歴史ある建物を外から観賞するのも面白い。建築に興味のある人なら十分に楽しめるだろう。

During spring, the main street at Ueno Park overflows with visitors who come for flower viewing, creating bustling athmosphere.

However, Ueno Park’s autumn can be enjoyed quietly, far removed from the city’s noisy hustle and bustle.
Are you aware that just off the main street that crosses the park, the area becomes dotted with small Shinto shrines?
Ueno Daibutsu

After surviving fires and earthquakes, what is left of the once 6 meter tall Daibutsu is only its head.
Hanazonoinari Shrine

From between the trees, the scarlet torii gates come into view suddenly and stretch out before you in rows throughout the scenery.
It even resembles Kyoto’s Fushimi Inari-taisha.
Once you pass these torii gates, you will arrive at Hanazonoinari Shrine.

Right next to Hanazonoinari Shrine there is another shrine called Gojyōten Shrine which also has a nice atmosphere.
Shinobazu Pond
Once you come out on the other side of the shrines, what comes into view is the Shinobazu Pond.

In the center of Shinobazu Pond, there is a ‘Benzaidou’ where the god Benzaiten is enshrined, and here it is surrounded by lotus flowers.
Around this area there are many unique stone monuments with inscriptions that you should pay attention to, such as the ‘Glasses Stone’.
Why here? For what purpose? Are they part of a cemetery? It is a mystery.
Ueno Zoo
After passing Shinobazu Pond, we head towards Ikenohata Gate of Ueno Zoo.
▲Ticket machine and brochure are five languages correspondence.
This is Japan’s oldest zoo. There are many animals and no matter how many times you visit, you will not tire of it.
There are few visitors that enter through this gate, and you can find fun in taking either a new or a different route each time.
I recommend coming in the afternoon and taking your time to see the animals until closing time.
Nocturnal animals start to come out in the afternoon. Even the usually lazy lions and tigers start to move about as the evening comes closer.
The nocturnal Giant Salamander who usually hides under rocks during the day even came out and showed himself which is definitely a rare sight.
stroll around the buildings
If you have the stamina for it, I recommend continuing on past the park and taking a stroll around the buildings near Ueno Park. The north of Ueno Park is surrounded by many art and science museums.
It is good to observe from the inside though it is also interesting to go out and observe the buildings themselves which were designed by historically famous architects. For those interested in architecture, there is surely plenty to enjoy here.
